While this is never shown in more detail ingame, it stands to reason that Enclave APA Mk1 and especially Mk2 are actually somewhat superior designs when compared to the old X-01, more practical to maintain etc. With their new armor models, Enclave also abandoned the US military model naming standards instead simply going for Advanced Power Armor (APA) Mk1 and Mk2.
Enclave armors do borrow a lot from previous makes and models, improving upon them, but they are not the same. X means experimental, which means it is not yet ready for mass production or full scale field use.Īll Enclave Powerarmors (except for their old pre-war T-51b armors still in limited use) are post-war designs completed way more than a century after the Great War of 2077. In Fallout lore, standardized mass produced US military powerarmors are all designated 'T', like T-45d or T-51b. This is similar practice comparable to frex US Air Forces - Experimental jet fighter models are designated 'X', and standardized fighter models are designated 'F'. X-01 is a pre-war experimental prototype powerarmor design which was in fairly limited military field testing in the Boston area just before the war (hence the 'X' designation in the name - The X designation is typically replaced by the proper model name after the design has been finalized and standardized for mass production).
There is no X-02 powerarmor model, the Great War of 2077 occurred during the X-01 testing phase and effectively ended the US military as well as it's powerarmor R&D. Thanks to Fallout 76 we now know that the Enclave Power Armor was base on the X-01 Power Armor that made right before Great War. Mk II, Tesla Power Armor, and the Hellfire Power Armor from Fallout 3. There is the Prototype X-01 Power Armor from Fallout 76, the Enclave Remnants Power Armor from Fallout New Vegas, and Enclave Advanced Power Armor.
